Packing the bowl means laying the tobacco before a session so it heats evenly and releases its flavour. It affects taste more than anything else. Step by step.
Step 1. Prepare the tobacco
Fluff the tobacco and remove large stems. If it’s heavy with syrup you can lightly squeeze it, but don’t over-dry.
Step 2. Lay it airily
Place the tobacco loosely, without pressing. It should sit freely so air passes through it. Dense packing is the main cause of bitterness.
Step 3. Leave a gap to the rim
Lay the tobacco 2–4 mm below the rim so it doesn’t touch the foil or kaloud. Otherwise the top layer burns and turns bitter.
Step 4. Heat up
Place 3–4 cubes of 25 mm around the rim (or in the kaloud). Let the bowl heat for 3–5 minutes, then regulate the heat.
Pack types
- Fluffy — universal, for most tobaccos. Loose, with a gap.
- Dense (overpack) — for kaloud and strong tobaccos, level or slightly above the rim. Needs experience.
Common mistakes
- Pressed the tobacco → bitterness.
- Tobacco touches the foil → the top burns.
- Too much charcoal at once → overheating.
