Most hookah problems aren’t about the equipment but small mistakes with charcoal and tobacco. Here are the most common ones and how to avoid them.
1. Under-heated charcoal
Charcoal put on the hookah before it’s fully heated. The result — bitterness, weak heat, a burnt smell. Rule: only place charcoal with an even red colour and a light grey coating across the whole surface.
2. Overheating the bowl
Too much charcoal or no heat management — the tobacco burns instead of smouldering, and bitterness appears. Fix: start with 3 cubes, use an HMD, remove excess heat.
3. Dense packing
Pressed tobacco heats worse and turns bitter. Fix: lay it airily, just below the bowl rim.
4. Cheap quick-light charcoal
Chemical additives add an aftertaste and ruin the session. Fix: only coconut charcoal without additives.
5. Damp charcoal
Damp charcoal lights poorly and smokes. Fix: store it dry; move an opened pack into an airtight container.
6. Rarely flipping or swapping charcoal
The charcoal burns out, heat drops and the flavour “dies.” Fix: flip cubes and top up with fresh ones in time.
Takeaway
Fully heating the charcoal, controlling heat, airy packing, coconut without chemicals and dry storage remove 90% of problems. More on lighting here.
