How to open a hookah lounge: consumables checklist

When opening a hookah lounge, consumables define your service quality and ongoing costs. Below is a purchasing checklist and how to size the starting volume.

Consumables (bought regularly)

  • Coconut charcoal — the foundation. Budget ~60 g per session (see HoReCa consumption).
  • Tobacco — a flavour range for your audience, in different strengths.
  • Foil / kalouds — heat management.
  • Spare charcoal, tongs, mats, cleaning brushes.

Equipment (one-off purchase)

  • Hookahs and bases (with spares for breakage).
  • Bowls of different types.
  • Stove/burner for lighting, a charcoal heater.
  • Disposable mouth tips (hygiene).

How to size the first charcoal order

Expected sessions per day × 30 × 60 g + 15% buffer.

Example: 30 sessions/day → 30×30×60 g = 54 kg + buffer ≈ 62 kg/month. Buy 1 kg packs by the case — cheaper per kilo.

Where not to cut corners

  • On charcoal. Cheap, high-ash, chemical charcoal ruins flavour and reputation.
  • On supply stability. Charcoal and tobacco must not run out at peak time.

Where to start buying

Find a direct supplier with consistent batches and a sample (see how to choose a supplier). Get a sample, test it, lock in regular supply.
